Probate & Elder Law
The Probate Practice Group at White Arnold & Dowd includes attorneys Sidney C. Summey and Karen M. Hennecy, who have extensive experience in probate court, elder law matters and litigation involving probate issues.
The attorneys in the Probate Practice Group have a long history of providing support services to litigation firms, often serving as the "probate department" for many personal injury firms. Many clients are referred to our probate practice group by litigators who are handling personal injury lawsuits for the families of minors or persons with disabilities. Our firm assists with the careful analysis of available options including Special Needs trusts, structured settlements or lump sum distributions involving conservatorships or trusts. The group also establishes and maintains guardianships, conservatorships or special needs trusts for the care of loved ones.
In addition, the group handles Elder Law issues such as traditional estate planning, asset preservation, Medicaid applications and planning, and the analysis or mediation of nursing home bills and care giving disputes. Karen M. Hennecy, a past president of the Alabama State Bar’s Elder Law Section, assists clients and their families with matters including advance directives, "Miller" trusts, durable powers of attorney, wills, trusts, asset preservation and Medicaid planning, and administration of the estates of decedents and protected persons.
In February of 2008, Sidney C. Summey, who has over 30 years experience in the probate and civil courts in Alabama, was appointed by Probate Judge Alan L. King as the County Conservator and Guardian for Jefferson County, Alabama. In this position, Mr. Summey serves as Conservator, Guardian, Trustee or Payee appointed by the Probate Court, the Circuit Court, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs or the Social Security Administration.
Attorney C. Burton Dunn also assists clients with probate matters, including those under Conservatorship or Guardianship, working with state and federal agencies, such as Social Security Administration, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and DHR.
